Saemangeum Development Corporation is part of Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, being responsible for initiating projects related to renewable energy, new town development, including tourism. To attract companies to Saemangeum, they will provide K-RE100 certificate, introduce PPA and other incentives

Sweden Innovation Days at Dubai Expo 2020

Sweden+Korea Green Transition Alliance* (“the Alliance”) launched its Market Access Report in October 2022 containing how each Alliance member can contribute to South Korea's green transition. For the launch of the report and to demonstrate the successful cases of the circular city, green energy, and smart mobility presented in the Market Access Report, the Alliance invited Korean journalists to Sweden for a visiting program on 13-15 March 2023. 

The report describes how Sweden has succeeded triple helix collaboration that has resulted in 50% GDP growth and a reduction in carbon emissions by 26% between 1990 and 2017. The industry, government, and research institutes need to get together to create a sustainable environment and the Swedish cases have proved that green transition strengthens global competitiveness.

Korean delegation's visit to Sweden

Leading companies, experts and engineers in the Korean and international hydrogen industry attended H2 Mobility+Energy Show 2021 for international cooperation and to explore technology innovation, policies and visions for the future.

Three members of Sweden+Korea Green Transition Alliance attended the H2 Mobility+Energy Show. Exhibition theme of the Sweden pavilion was ‘Hydrogen value chain’ – green production, storage, distribution and application. 

LeadIT (Leadership Group for Industry Transition) led by Stockholm Environment Institute Gökce Mete made a keynote speech on the role of hydrogen in industry transition at the Global H2 Conference on 10 September. She also participated in a panel discussion along with Jaeyoung Park at Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Dongwook Kim, Vice President at Hyundai Motor Group on hydrogen mobility trends and hydrogen industry.

ABB presented Green Hydrogen Production providing broad portfolio encompassing the full hydrogen value chain from production, storage, distribution to consumption. 

Kraftpowercon presented how they can optimize the power supply with focus on lowest total cost of ownership - Powering Green Hydrogen as driven by our need to reduce carbon emissions, but cost of Hydrogen is not affordable. 

Impact Coatings has been at the forefront developing and delivering clean coating technologies and provides highly efficient coating solutions for metal bipolar plates necessary for fuel cell and electrolysis.

Very timely, the recently published Sweden’s Hydrogen Strategies to reach fossil free competitiveness in the 22 industry road maps was also presented at the booth.

Stockholm Environment Institute, City of Gothenburg shared the circular solutions in cities in Sweden, and the alliance member companies, Atlas Copco and IKEA shared their effort and experiences to cultivate a circular economy into the people’s daily life and support their business sustainable. GGGI stressed the importance of international green partnerships to strengthen the circular economy.

These forward-thinking circular economy policies pursued by Sweden, and South Korea aim to bring about fundamental upstream changes and foster the competitive trade of circular products within the market. 

The seminar presented an opportunity for the government and circular city solution providers to have an open and honest dialogue about the challenges and needs of businesses to support and increase investment in green growth, green jobs, and environmental quality.

The alliance will continue its active collaboration with relevant Korean partners to support South Korea’s green transition.

The common vision was to establish Sweden as Korea's top strategic partner in its transition towards a Green and Carbon Neutral society. 

Through 'Sweden+Korea Green Transition Alliance', a jointly established communication platform showcasing Swedish expertise, we can deepen the partnership with South Korea in its green transition, not only in the business community, but also with people around us.

During the Kick-off meeting, we decided the expectations as a member company to join Sweden+Korea Green Transition Alliance are:

This invitation-only forum has brought together the key stakeholders from packaging, recycling, and food and beverage industries, along with local and central governmental representatives, in an initiative to share visions and discuss potential ways forward to accelerate the recycling of paper containers and packaging in South Korea. The end goal is to raise awareness and promote a low-carbon circular economy, and speed progress towards a net-zero society.

Sweden’s national strategy, hydrogen ecosystem and support measure were introduced to the Korean target audience from the industry
Sweden, endowed with abundant renewable resources, has committed to achieving a climate neutral society by 2045, recognizing hydrogen’s pivotal role in the transition to net zero greenhouse gas emission.

Given both countries’ alignment with NDC 2030 targets and their emphasis on the energy transition, their respective strengths and area of development can complement each other in establishing a sustainable and efficient hydrogen based economy. By forging a strategic partnership, these nations can make significant strides towards a greener and more sustainable future.

During the H2 MEET exhibition, one of the largest hydrogen industrial exhibition in Asia, Business Sweden hosted a Swedish pavilion and introduced Sweden’s hydrogen ecosystem through two programs - Swedish Hydrogen Production & Fuel Cell Seminar and Hydrogen Roundtable Program.

From Sweden, Swedish Energy Agency, Swedish e-Mobility Center and three alliance members - Alfa Laval, Cell Impact Kraftpowercon - presented and participated as panelist whereas KEPCO and SK Ecoplant participated on behalf of Korean side.


**Key deliveries:**
- Sweden’s national strategy, hydrogen ecosystem and support measure were introduced to the Korean target audience from the industry
- Public and private KOLs from Sweden and South Korea exchanged insights the possible areas to collaborate to ramp up the hydrogen economy

At the “pledging ceremony” at the Swedish Ambassador’s Residence, the 13 Swedish companies participating in “Sweden+Korea Green Transition Alliance” together with the Embassy of Swe-den, Business Sweden and Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Korea, signed a mission statement outlining their commitments.  

Ambassador Hallgren declared that the companies in the Green Transition Alliance have commit-ted to support Korea's future green competitiveness in three ways.

- Take Action. Commit to assess environmental risks and opportunities in their operations. 
- Co-create. To seek partnerships for innovative solutions that will advance sustainability across major sectors. 
- Raise ambitions. To inspire bold action to bring forward South Korea’s target to become a carbon neutral economy ahead of 2050

Ambassador Hallgren said: “It is interesting to note that many of the companies in the Alliance have set more ambitious goals for carbon neutrality than both the Governments of Sweden and Korea. This is truly inspiring, and I wish it will help push the agenda in both countries.”  

At this event, △ABB △Atlas Copco △Envac △Ikea △Kraft Powercon △Okla △Scandinavian Biogas △Scania △SF Marina △Tetra Pak △Volvo Cars △Volvo Construction Equipment △Volvo Trucks, which are actively engaged in various fields including construction, energy, ma-rine, energy, manufacturing, retail, transportation, and waste management present concrete pledge respectively targeting green transition and carbon neutrality by 2050 in Korea. 

Sweden is one of the most advanced countries in creating sustainable business environment, prov-ing that the green transition helps companies strengthen their competitiveness. The 13 Swedish companies who present the pledge are paying much attention and effort to environmental issues, which are cited as Sweden’s best practices.

Ambassador Hallgren added "The green transition is one of the ways to create a wide range of business opportunities and increase competitiveness," and "Korea's Green New Deal and its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 could be a turning point for Korea to develop into a green carbon neutral society." 

Ibrahim Baylan, Swedish Minister for Business, Industry and Innovation stated, It is mutually benefitting that South Korea is the first country where Swedish companies have come together in this way to form an alliance for green transition outside of Sweden.” in a statement on "Green Growth is possible – how to deepen collaboration between Sweden and Korea”, and added “I hope you will be able to work with your Korean partners to approach a fossil-free conduct of business. There is an advantage to be first in this race for the climate.” 

Ban Ki-moon, GGGI Assembly President & Council Chair and 8th UN Secretary-General said in a message “The governments of the world cannot tackle the climate crisis without the private sectors.” Secretary General Ban continued “I want to express my sincere thanks and congratula-tions to the participants in the Sweden + Korea Green Transition Alliance who are willing to step up their commitments to reduce their environmental and carbon footprints and to encourage others to do the same” “As a Korean citizen, I am proud to learn that a growing number of Ko-rean firms are also making similar commitments” 

Yoo Yeonchul , Ambassador for Climate Change of the Republic of Korea and Executive Direc-tor of the P4G Preparatory Office said “Sweden’s rich experience will help accelerate Korea’s green transition and build a better environment and I hope today’s meeting to become a starting point of solidifying the green partnership between two countries.” and continued “In addition, for Korea’s eco-friendly future, the Korean government will hold ‘2021 P4G Summit’ on May 30 and 31 to share its vision for carbon neutrality with the resolution of climate change as a key agenda.” 

Sweden at the forefront of technology-led green transition is a country that has shown that it can be achieved economic growth and reduce carbon emissions at the same time, with Sweden's GDP rising 50% while its carbon emissions falling 26% between 1990 and 2017.

The event brought together nine Swedish member companies, the Embassy of Sweden, Business Swe-den, and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in South Korea. Participants discussed the importance of green transition and announced their commitment to supporting Korea's early achievement of carbon neutrality.

Anne Höglund, Acting Head of Mission at the Swedish Embassy, stated, "Korea is an important partner for Sweden, and our partnership has become even closer in recent years through our shared interest in car-bon neutrality amidst a rapidly changing world. Achieving the climate goals of the Paris Agreement and implementing net-zero are top priorities for both countries, and we must all work together to accelerate the green transition."

Ebba Busch, Swedish Minister for Energy, Business and Industry, and Deputy Prime Minister, Ministry of Climate and Enterprise, emphasized the significance of achieving green transition in the industry, stating, "Achieving green transition in the industry is crucial for economic prosperity, energy security, and long-term sustainability. We hope that the Sweden+Korea Green Transition Alliance actively continues to pro-mote international cooperation for a sustainable future for both countries."

Sang-Hyup Kim, Co-Chair of the Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth, high-lighted the close partnership between Korea and Sweden since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1959. He stated, "Sweden+Korea Green Transition Alliance, launched on Earth Day 2021, prioritizes cooperation between the two countries in responding to the global climate crisis and transitioning to green energy. This holds special significance. As a united team, Korea and Sweden expect that green growth will not be a cost or burden to our economies, but rather a great opportunity for creating new jobs and fostering sustainable growth."

During the event, nine member companies, including Atlas Copco Group, Hitachi Energy, IKEA, KraftPowercon, Scania, SF Marina, Tetra Pak, Volvo Cars, and Volvo Trucks, announced their plans and commitments: 

- Atlas Copco Group: Maintain a maximum 2-degree temperature increase by reducing CO2 emissions across the entire value chain by 2030
- Hitachi Energy: Transition to 100% decarbonized electricity for RE100 by 2030
- IKEA: Switch to 100% electric vehicle furniture delivery service by 2025
- Kraftpowercon: Support the industry in reducing air pollution by 30% by 2050
- Scania: Reduce carbon emissions from operational vehicles by 20% by 2026
- SF Marina: Achieve a reduction of over 50% in carbon emissions from marina construction by 2030
- Tetra Pak: Achieve a recycling rate of 70% by 2030
- Volvo Cars: Achieve climate neutrality by 2040
- Volvo Trucks: Transition to 100% carbon emission-free by 2040

These companies are active in various fields such as construction, energy, shipbuilding, manufacturing, retail, transportation, and waste management, contributing to the promotion of Sweden's circular econ-omy and the creation of a sustainable industrial environment.

Sweden+Korea Green Transition Alliance is a pioneering initiative launched on Earth Day 2021, bringing together Swedish companies in Korea, the Embassy of Sweden in Korea, Business Sweden, and the Swe-dish Chamber of Commerce in Korea. The alliance seeks to accelerate South Korea's green transition and progress towards carbon neutrality goals through partnership between leading Swedish companies and domestic industry players.

On 8 May, a Swedish delegation, led by Anne Höglund, Acting Swedish Ambassador in Seoul, visited the Wando-Dong Jeju 3 (Jeju 3) HVDC Converter Station on Jeju Island, South Korea.  


During the visit, the delegation received a safety briefing and was introduced to Hitachi Energy’s HVDC technology. They had the opportunity to explore the site, including the converter stations, valve hall, and control room. Hitachi Energy's voltage-source converter (VSC) symmetrical monopole HVDC technology, capable of injecting 200 MW of power into the grid with enhanced stability and reliability, was showcased.


[The Jeju 3 project](https://www.hitachienergy.com/about-us/customer-success-stories/wando-dongjeju-3-hvdc-converter-station-project), developed in collaboration with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), aims to meet the growing electricity demand by establishing an advanced HVDC link. The converter stations, which convert power from AC to DC and vice versa, will facilitate bidirectional power transfer through subsea DC cables. This HVDC solution will improve the efficiency of the island's interconnections, stabilize the grid, and minimize the risk of outages.


The visit highlighted the successful implementation of HVDC solutions at Jeju 3 and their role in ensuring a reliable power supply. The Swedish delegation expressed pride in Hitachi Energy's pioneering HVDC technology, which originated in Sweden 70 years ago and has since been deployed in HVDC projects worldwide. The delegation recognized the potential of HVDC technology to provide millions of consumers with clean electricity, contributing to global efforts towards carbon neutrality.


The Jeju 3 project represents a significant milestone for Korea as it is the country's first Voltage-Source Converter installation. This project will enhance grid stability and reliability on Jeju Island and support South Korea's goal of making Jeju Province carbon-free and powered entirely by renewable energy by 2030.

Hitachi Energy - Wando-Dongjeju HVDC Converter Station

The Embassy of Sweden in South Korea and Business Sweden in Seoul have partnered with the Korea Press Foundation (KPF) to invite Korean journalists to Sweden through the KPF Diploma programme. This marks the first collaboration between these organisations. The initiative aims to provide journalists with access to leading Swedish companies and organisations focused on the green transition, climate mitigation, and adaptation. Journalists will interview government officials, industry representatives, and academics to gain insights into Sweden's environmental strategies and sustainability efforts.


A pre-departure session was hosted by Team Sweden at the Swedish Embassy in Seoul. Charge d’Affaires Johannes Andreasson and Science and Innovation Counsellor Lars Hammarström provided a presentation on Swedish climate and energy policies. The session also introduced the Sweden + Korea Green Transition Alliance, its member companies, and the programme schedule.

The trip to Sweden, scheduled from 26 August to 2 September, will include visits to various cities and companies across different industry sectors. Supported by the Sweden + Korea Green Transition Alliance, the trip will highlight Sweden's efforts in green transition, sustainability, and climate technology.


Alliance member companies such as Hitachi Energy, Tetra Pak, Volvo Cars, and I-Tech will host the group, showcasing their technologies and contributions to climate goals.
